Stift Goettweig Pinot Noir Gottweiger Berg
The first time we had the absolute pleasure of tasting this wine was on a train from Vienna to Verona earlier this year (2011). We had just completed our trip to Stift Goettweig-especially to meet up with Fritz to see the new wine equipment, cavernous cellar and the vineyards and were on our way to Verona to meet up with Stefano Inama and his team-(superb Soave from the Hill of Foscarino). Our only regret was that we had only one bottle!
It is completely different, despite all the developments and improvements to the "standard expectation" of Red wine from Austria and Germany-dare I say it.So much so that we acquired six dozen for our own cellar at home.
Tasting Notes
Best described as a cross between a "mid-weight" quality Central Otago Pinot and a good quality full (Northern) Burgundy. Full of fruit and savoury aromas and flavours with developing sweet tannins, fresh balanced acidity, medium plus mouthweight and a medium plus lingering finish. Fritz tells us that he has tried to move even closer to a Burgundy style for the 2010 so we wait for the barrel samples. Alcohol 14.0% 30/7/11
