McHenry Hohnen Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon
The 2010 harvest started early , but once the whites were picked the weather cooled fortuitously allowing better ripening conditions for the reds-especially for the phenolics (skins, pips etc).-consequently the whites are looking exceptional with beautiful natural acidity coupled with ripe fruit flavours. The blend is 51% semillon, coming from the more Northernly vineyards-providing the lifted fruit aromatics and palate weight-and the sauvignon blanc (49%) comes from the cooler southern Margaret River wine area contributing the firm acidity structure-the majority of the grapes for this wine are grown under contract for McHenry Hohnen. The objective is to produce a wine that has forward fresh fruit characters with balanced natural acidity-as a result the grapes are night harvested and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. They are fined and filtered just prior to bottling.
Tasting Notes
The McHenry Hohnen Margaret River Semillon Sauvignon has a fresh nose that gives a pronounced lift of guava and mango skins with its trademark passion-fruit flesh. With white peach heralding the first of the flavours, it’s a crunchy Granny Smith who finishes them. Crisp and dry, the wine displays elements of minerality and flint that couple well with the slightly limey acid finish.-alcohol 12.7% tasting notes by Ryan Walsh-Winemaker 31.05.11
