Stift Goettweig Messwein Gruner Veltliner, Kremstal
The Goettweiger Messwein, or Altar wine, has been an institution at this Benedictine monastery for centuries. The gruner veltliner Messwein is vinified as a light dry wine. Messwein cannot be produced without the express permission of the bishop, and both the care of the grapes, and the vinification-(wine making process)-must follow the strict rules laid down in the "Reinheitsgebot" or purity law as set out by the church, and cannot be altered in any way.
Tasting Notes
This Stift Goettweig Messwein Gruner Veltliner is very pale lemon in colour with hints of "flat green". It has delicate aromas of light orchard pear, citrus notes with hints of lemon confectioned sweets. On the palate the wine is dry, clean and fresh, and full of delicate flavours of the orchard-(apples and pears), dry lemon citrus and hints of grapefruit with a medium plus lingering finish. Easy drinking on its own in the garden, or early evening. Alcohol 12.% Last tasted 31.05.11
