Carlos Serres

French born wine consultant Carlos Serres moved to Haro in 1885. He had been originally comissioned by french wine shipper Alfonse Vigier to find alternative quality wine producing areas outside of France, with similar high quality Bordeaux terroir as the French vineyards were being devastated by Philoxera, with Vigiers wine shipping business alongside it.

In 1896 he established Bodegas Carlos Serres in the small Rioja town of Haro. He pioneered the first Haro winery and established the business as an "export merchant". By the start of the 20th Century he was exporting Rioja wines regularly to France, The U.K, Cuba and The U.S.A.  A driving force in the early years of Rioja's international wine development, he was the founder of "The Rioja Wine Exporters Syndicate" in 1907-the forerunner of todays Consejo Regulador of the DOCa Rioja.
The new "state of the art" winery was built in the early 1950s on the main road running into Haro from the A68.  For the past few years it has been used only as a storage and ageing facility-the concrete tank and barrique storage capacity is huge-however under the new ownership of Pedro Vivanco-who also owns the Museum of Wine Culture in Briones just South East of Haro-there are plans to restore the winery to a full production facility.
