Bodegas Ezquerro
Winemaker and Enologist Carmelo Ortega was born in 1964 in Tudelilla-south of the famous Rioja city of Logorno. The origins of his winery "Bodegas y Vinedos Ortega Ezquerro" date back to 1896 when the first grapevines were planted by his great-grandfather Don Quintin Ortega near Tudelilla.
In 1998, Carmelo, inspired by the geological characteristics of his vineyards, revived the winery and latterly in 2002 purchased the local co-operatives new wine making facility just 750 metres from the original Ortega bodega. His wines have received numerous awards on a national and international level and export markets as far as China now demand his wine.
The grapevines, are up to 65 years old and set up at a distance of 1.5 metres apart from each other. Small quantities of high quality fruit are the result with an average of just 3,000kg grapes per hectare. The grapes are exclusively picked by hand and only the best ones are finally selected. The fermentation process takes place in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. Afterwards, the wine is transferred to American and French oak barrels for ageing. This family run artisan business is undergoing a transformation growing both the quality and volume of wine without losing control of its heritage and history.
Carmel-a focused caring dedicated man that is on a mission to keep improving quality-is clearly leaving a legacy that we hope at least one of his four young sons will continue to follow.
