Bartinney

Originally established in 1920 by a director of Harrods, Bartinney is now owned and operated by husband and wife team Michael and Rose Jordaan, ably assisted by their winemaker Therese de Beer who joined them in January 2009. Bartinney is situated on the high slopes of Helshoogte Pass overlooking the picturesque Banghoek Valley in Stellenbosch. The main manor house was built in 1923 combining English Tudor and Cape Dutch architectural styles. In 1954 the property was acquired by Dr Michael Jordan and the current generation is the fourth to farm the property

The three main grape varieties grown on the estate are Sauvignon Blanc (3.23 hectares), Chardonnay (2.96 hectares) and Cabernet Sauvignon (12.5 hectares), with the whites being grown on the higher North and North East facing slopes, while the reds are grown at a slightly lower altitude with a variety of aspects. The elevations-up to 550 metres above sea level, combined with some very extreme slopes (up to 45%)-necessitate the tending of the vines to be done by hand. Soils consist mostly of high potential deep red, well drained soils on the mid slopes. Red, stony soils are found on the higher slopes.
Having obtained her degree in Viticulture and Oenology from Stellenbosch University in 1999, winemaker Therese de Beer travelled extensively throughout South Australia and California working in wineries, plus a spell in London in wine marketing before returning to South Africa to take up the position of assistant winemaker at Groot Constantia Wine Estate. After two and a half years she became head winemaker at Doolhof Wine Estate where during her tenure of 4 years achieved many accolades both locally and internationally.
Michael and Rose made Bartinney their permanent home in 2008 and immediately embarked on a programme of replanting much of the land with trees and flora indigenous to the area-up to 5000 trees and plants have been re planted on thirteen hectares of land that was previously a pine and gum plantation. This coupled with other conservation and recycling initiatives resulted in the Bartinney wines becoming carbon neutral. They received their Champion status in Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) in September of 2010.
