Louis Roederer
Inherited from his uncle and renamed in 1833 by Louis Roederer the original house was founded in 1776 as Dubois Pere et Fils. Since then the house has remained under descendant family control untill the present-with Frederic Rouzaud taking over the reigns as Managing Director from his father Jean Claude Rouzaud who is now Chairman.
In the very late 1800s Louis Roederer was nominated as the official wine supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia-under Tsar Nicholas 11-and from this grew the famous prestige cuvee Cristal-made exclusively for the royal family. Unfortunately the fall of the Tsar in 1917 coupled with the American prohibition brought hard times for the house but it survived and is now today not only succesfull in its own right but also owns a number of other vineyards and estates in Bordeaux, Portugal, Provence and California.
The balance being produced from very established vineyards owned by third party growers but produced to a strict regime and quality set out by Roederer.
Each vineyard plot is fermented separately to preserve the unique characteristics of the vineyard and the variety. A selection of the finest wines in each vintage is set aside to be matured in large oak casks in Roederer’s unique ‘Reserve Cellar’. After two to six years’ ageing they are used in the blend of Roederer’s Brut Premier (around 10%) to give the mature complexity and consistent character which defines the Roederer style. All Louis Roederer’s wines are aged in bottle well in excess of the stipulated time and always receive an extra six months ageing after disgorging and before shipment.
