Barone Ricasoli
The name of Ricasoli has been linked to wine since 1411 when the family took ownership of Brolio Castle. Documents from the 1600s report the first exports to Amsterdam and England. It was however in 1872 that Baron Bettino Ricasoli wrote to Professor Cesare Studiati at The University of Pisa documenting his thoughts on the wine we now know as Chianti, and in particular the role that each permitted grape variety played in the flavours and aromas of the wine.
At just twenty years old, Bettino Ricasoli, known as the “Iron Baron”, began his research and experiments in Brolio, with the aim of producing a high-quality wine in Chianti, able to compete on an international level with the great French wines, the undisputed leaders of the time.
In 1867 wine from Brolio was awarded the first gold medal at the Paris Exposition.
Standing on the terraces of the castle one can look out at the panoramic sweeping vineyards and romantic Tuscany countryside, dotted here and there with quaint terracotta coloured roofs of the local buildings and churches going all the way back to the hills in the distance.
