Cloudy Bay
Cloudy Bay, now owned by luxury group LVMH, would not normally be included in Cellarmarques' listings as we focus on privately owned wineries. However Cellarmarque has a bit of a link here due to our relationship with David Hohnen, of McHenry Hohnen Vintners of Margaret River, Australia and his family -(David was the original founder of Cloudy Bay in 1985), and with British Born winemaker Kevin Judd who hosted our visit in December of 2007. Kevin has now gone on, after 25 years at Cloudy Bay, to set up his own venture Greywacke.
The winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770
The vineyards are located at four different locations within The Marlborough region, the first being the original Cloudy Bay estate in Rapaura, located on Jacksons Rd-with planting beginning in 1986-almost all Sauvignon Blanc with a little Chardonnay. This was followed by the purchase of The Widows Block in Renwick in 1990-again predominantly Sauvignon Blanc but with a little Pinot Noir, the Mustang Vineyard in Brancott Valley in 1994-mainly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay with a little Pinot Noir and some Pinot Gris and Gewurtztraminer, and finally the Barracks Block Vineyard-Omaka Valley-which commenced planting in 2004-dedicated entirely to Pinot Noir.
