Highlands Road Estate

Justin Hoy is an exciting winemaker who with his wife Mary swapped carrot–farming in the UK to return to his native South Africa and whose enthusiasm for the subject is matched by his skill. Justin and Mary purchased in 2004, this former fruit farm and identified it as an ideal area for Sauvignon Blanc. Situated on the clay slopes in the up and coming Elgin region of South Africa, this boutique winery is perfect for the cultivation of this grape with a cool climate and abundant winter rainfall.

The first three-hectare vineyard was planted on the south, south-westerly Tukulu slopes, with ten more hectares planned over the next two years. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, they also have small plantings of Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Semillon and Chardonnay. Both Justin and Mary believes that wine is made in the vineyard, and they take pride in cultivating the best quality grapes to create Highland Road wines. As a true expression of this philosophy, they use minimal intervention in the winemaking, never adding acid to their wines and relying on the cool climate to provide the distinctive character of the Elgin Valley. They believe in a philosophy that Elgin Sauvignons can have enough backbone to age for up to five years like some of the classic Sancerre wines.
