Craggy Range

Located in the North island of New Zealand, around Hawkes Bay you will find the brand new "cutting edge" HQ for Craggy including the state of the art Bordeaux inspired"Sophia" winery, tasting room and The Terroir Restaurant-which if you are in the area is well worth visiting for dinner. Owned by the Peabody family, the wines of Craggy are produced under the ever watchful eye of talented and much respected Master of Wine Steve Smith and his winemaking team. Located at the base of the spectacular scarp of Te Mata Peak-known in local Maori legends as the "fallen giant-(hence the name "The Giants Winery"-you can see the outline of the giants figure within the mountain top line)- with Craggy Range itself to the South East, the "Home" of Craggy reflects the dedication, passion and huge financial investment made to make these unique single vineyard wines so special.

Craggy has several single vineyard plots throughout both the South and North islands matching the best vine growing sites and climates with the best grape varieties. In the Hawkes Bay area they have the "Gimbletts Gravels" vineyards-100 hectares- planted on grey gravel stone that was destined to be a quarry. Here the merlot, cabernet franc and syrah are grown all surrounding  the second winery-called simply The Highway  50 Winery-which enjoys the latest and probably some of the most sophisticated winemaking equipment in the world today. Moving South to Martinborough is the "Te Muna" vineyard where they produce grapes for their Te Muna Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Crossing over to the South Island is Marlborough-the home of Craggys' Avery Sauvignon Blanc and Nelson for their riesling grapes. Moving on down to The Central Otago they share The Calvert  vineyard with Feltham Rd -(of Nigel Greening fame)-producing the excellent Calvert Pinot Noir. New sites and vineyards are always under consideration-such as the pinot gris trial plantings in the Waitaki valley just North of The Otago. Craggys wine making philosophy is to compliment the very best grapes that nature can provide from the individual plots and climates, with the very best technical advantages available while at all times recognising the wealth of wine making knowledge that has been developed worldwide from down the centuries.
