Crawford River

In the early seventies John Thomson decided to give up a very lucrative banking career in the City of London to return to the family homestead in a remote corner of Western Victoria. There in Condah, in the Crawford River region (just 20 miles inland from "The Great Southern") , West of Melbourne, in South West Victoria, with his wife Catherine they planted up their first vineyards. Riesling and Cabernet are the two main varieties but they also have small plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. John has now been joined by his daughter who, having completed her studies had been travelling and working her way around the wine world. The new cellar door facility was opened in 2000.

The vineyard and winery have been built upon the land that once was a large sheep and cattle station operated by John's great grandfather who settled there in 1884.
The underlying volcanic rock, cobined with the limestone layers overlaid with gravelly bassalt loam provide complex mineral structures to the wines-especially critical when it comes to rieslings. This natural resource coupled with their "minimal intervention" approach, dry grown viticulture and low yield mentality results in wines that, not only show or express their "terroir", but also, show complexity, good structure and balance. A favourite of Jancis Robinsons, the riesling continually competes against the well known Jeffrey Grossetts Polish Hill riesling.
