Giant Steps

The sense and architecture on entering Healesville, takes you back almost to the early days of the pioneers-that is untill you go three quarters of the way through the town-as there stands a modern "micro brewery" style building and restaurant which belongs to one of the modern day pioneers of the Yarra wine industry, namely Phil Sexton-and this is the home of Giant Steps.

The style of the building almost certainly originates from Phils tenure in the micro brew industry-he trained as a brewer in the seventies in Birmingham and was co-founder of "Little Creatures" micro brewery and restaurant in Freemantle .

Following his succesful development of "Devil's Lair" winery in Margaret River, Phil and his American winemaker wife Alison sold out to Southcorp and moved over to The Yarra Valley. Steve Flamsteed joined their team as head winemaker and together they developed Giant Steps and Innocent Bystander Wines.

The first vineyard-now named The Sexton Vineyard-was planted in 1997 with Steve joining in 2003. The objective was to produce single vineyard wines of quality and complexity that showed finesse and length. To that end a number of different clones were brought in from Burgundian sources to experiment and develop on different soils and aspects. Clones such as MB6, 114/115, 777 and 5-(which is a favourite for Pommard) are currently being used.

While not a certified Biodynamique vineyard (as at 2008) Steve adopts the classic practices of Biodynamique viticulture using the Antipodean Astro Calendar as his guide and is very focused on natural solutions to produce the very best quality wine reflecting the fruit and terroir.
