Arzuaga Navarro
New winemaker Jorge Monzon-who arrived in the summer of 2004 after a two year stage at Domaine de la Romanee Conti- (and with Vega Scicilia previous to that)-has taken what was already a well reputed estate and is moving it steadily higher.
The oldest vines on the estate are now 30 years old plus and of prime quality and condition.
Financed by Florentino Arzuaga's fashion empire the La Planta estate is some 1500 hectares in total with a game reserve and 5 star hotel and spa(Arzuaga Hotel).
The total family owned vineyards within Ribera equal 130 Hectares-80 hectares of The La Planta Estate plus a further 50 hectares in the Val du Sardon Vineyard. In addition Florentino purchased additional land In the La Mancha region with a view of cultivating olives-100 hectares of this land is now under vine producing the fabulous-(and well priced) Pago Florentino wine.
Jorge also has some experimental plantings of Petit Verdot and Syrah-neither officially permitted within Ribera-which he believes used judicially would give added depth, complexity and structure. The new French and American oak is more than tempered and balanced by the rich full tempranillo fruit within such cuvees as the La Planta.
The wines produced from Arzuaga have great structure and flavour with lovely texture throughout. Jorge, like so many of his young peers across the wine world is consistently looking to get the maximum expression from the "Terroir" with minimum intervention and catious judicious use of the very best Oak-now mainly new French .
