Stift Goettweig
January 2006 saw a new beginning for the ancient monastery vineyards of Stift Gottweig when a group of businessmen formed a new company and took over the lease of the vineyards. Impressed by the reputation of winemaker Fritz Miesbauer with his much acclaimed success at Austrias Freie Weingartner Wachau winery and at the Weingut Stadt Krems-which he has run since 2003-they asked him to head up this new venture.
Austria has clawed its way back from the wine scandals of the mid eighties, which near destroyed its wine industrys' reputation, to now producing world class top quality wines. The whites, from its own grape variety-"Gruner Veltliner" and of course Riesling-are made from grapes picked from both sites-Gruner Veltliner from the Gottschelle site and Riesling from the Silberbichl site. They are then transported to the winery at Stadt Krems-which has undergone a major investment programme. A small amount of really good Pinot Noir is also produced by Fritz.
The "Messwein"-(named after Altar Wine) has a screw cap closure while the other whites all have glass stoppers. The bulk of the vineyards are located on the right bank of the Danube in the wine growing area of the Kremstal, with the exception of the Silberbichl vineyard, which is located in the nearby Wachau. The unique climatic conditions allow for wines of purity and complexity with good quality pure fruit supported by well structured acidity.
