Bott-Geyl

Although local records show that a John Martin Geyl was a wine grower as far back as 1795 in Alsace, it was in 1993 when Jean Christophe Bott, and his wife Valerie, took over the running of Domaine Bott Geyl. In 2000 he converted his vineyards to "Organic" " and then in 2002 both the winery and all the vineyards became fully certified "Biodynamic" The vineyards, of which 4 are Premiere Cru (Lieux-dits)- and 3 Grand Cru, extend to 75 parcels over 14 hectares in 7 municipalities from Ribeauville to Kientzheim in the heart of Alsace-known also as "The Pearls of Vignoble". In the 2007 "Classement" -The "Revue du Vin de France" guide to all the best growers, Bott Geyl was promoted from one to two stars out of three-(there are only 3, 3 star Alsace producers and many of the better known and more famous producers have no stars at all!)

The Premiere Cru vineyards are in Zellenberg and Beblenheim and the Grand Crus are in Beblenheim, Mittelwhir, Riquewhir, Zellenberg, Sigolsheim and Kientzheim. The wine production is based on minimum intervention with all harvesting being done by hand, whole bunch pressing and a very long slow fermentation-which, due to the long time it takes-produces a skin maceration effect, effectively drawing out greater aromatics and characters, while at the same time producing a type of natural filter bed reducing unwanted particles. With wild yeasts on the skin starting the fermentation, each particular vineyard has its own natural yeasts which are used to ensure purity of "Terroir". After a very long slow fermentation, the wines are racked off and stored in either stainless steel or wood where they undergo their own natural fining without the use of any agents. The resultant layer of fine lees that drop to the bottom help develop additional natural characteristics to each wine. Before bottling the wines are racked again and filtered to eliminate "haze" and stabilise them. Quality throughout the whole process both in the winery and the vineyard make Bott Geyl one of the top wine stars in the Alsace region.
