Vieille Julienne

In 1990 Jean-Paul Daumen took over the family domaine and since then has been on a never ending quest to develop the very best Chateauneuf. Adopting very strict ecological practices, Jean-Paul hopes to obtain official "Biodynamique" recognition in 2011. (Search under “Wine Types” header on home page-select “Red Biodynamique”-for explanation) Rapidly becoming acknowledged as one of the top producers within the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region the wines are incredibly concentrated and yet full of soft ripe intense flavoured fruits.

Situated on the Northern part of the appellation, Vieille Julienne extends to around 30 hectares of vineyards. The high quality selected fruit-(in the rain soaked harvest of 2002 Jean-Paul rejected over 75% of the fruit)-coupled with the use of old large wooden foudres or neutral tanks for a slow and temperature controlled fermentation, used 225 litre Bordeaux barriques for ageing and bottling without fining or filtering, results in wines of such quality that the domaine is now recognised worldwide as one of the finest in the region.

From 2003 he decided to stop making his (Parker 100 point) Vieilles Vignes Chateauneuf in order that the juice from these low yield high quality vines could be used in the production of the signature Cuvee Tradition.

This driven and yet quiet and somewhat introvert winemaker is undoubtedly producing better and better wines as each year passes.
