Montirius
With 5 generations behind this winery, Eric and Christine Saurel, the current members of the family in charge, have truly fully embraced the Biodynamique culture in their wines, winery and personal lifestyle.
They are a wonderful quiet couple totally dedicated to producing fruit driven wine that fully expresses its surrounding environment
Covering both the Vacqueyras and Gigondas appellations, Eric and Christine work 54 hectares of vines. It was as far back as 1980 when Eric's father Max decided to stop applying chemical fertilisers and since that day there has been a move towards a "Biodynamique lifestyle"-1996 saw the official certification.
Focusing on three main grapes-Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre-the wines display excellent pure fruit characteristics-a style that is definitely helped by the lack of any wood at all in the winery. March 2002 saw the building of the new winery on the slopes of "Clos Montirius"
It is built over three levels within the slope of the hill to ensure that it does not spoil the landscape and to fully utilise the gravity benefit of moving the wine between the vats. There are 18 "150 hectolitre" vats which allows the entire grape harvest to be brought in without having to de-vat. All of the vats are constructed of concrete but the metal reinforcing rods have all been earthed to prevent electrical molecular disturbance to the wine thus allowing it to settle and clear much more efficiently. The wines are then matured over two winters in these vats.
The true love and care of this family is reflected in the vineyards, the winery and ultimately the wine.
